North Las Vegas Mayoral, Ward 1 elections go to runoffs; voter turnout up

June 26, 2026 by Anthony Varriano

Nevada State Assemblymember and Nevada Chair of the Democratic Party, Daniele Monroe-Moreno, received 47.06% of votes in June’s primary election for North Las Vegas Mayor, forcing a runoff with fellow Democrat and long-time City Councilmember Scott Black, who received 41.57% of the vote.

Three other candidates received at least three percent of the vote, with Henry Thorns earning 4.8% of the vote and Zaire Langdon getting 3.4% of the vote. Gary Bouchard received 925 votes, which accounted for 3.15%.

As of May 18, there were 178,524 registered voters for the North Las Vegas Municipal Elections, with 63,138 being Democrats, according to the Nevada Election Department. That means voter turnout for the Democratic Mayoral Primary Election was around 46%.

The majority of registered North Las Vegas municipal voters – 74,186 of them – have no party affiliation. Given Monroe-Moreno’s lead with Democratic primary voters, Black will likely have to win a majority of these unaffiliated voters to close the deficit.

Black was endorsed by current Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, but that endorsement and those of local unions hasn’t been enough to overcome the connections Monroe-Moreno has as Chair of Nevada’s Democratic Party. Monroe-Moreno’s campaign released a statement on her behalf, which reads, in part:

““My vision for our city is bold – a place where working families, seniors, and young people can afford to live, buy a home, and build their future. A destination city where residents work, live and play. Not just a place where Nevadans can survive, but thrive. We will continue working now through November 3rd to grow this grassroots movement, finish strong and realize this vision.”

Black’s camp also issued a statement regarding the upcoming runoff election:

“North Las Vegas voters responded to my message of safety, affordability and experience to vault us into the General Election. My family and I are deeply thankful for the amazing supporters who propelled our campaign. North Las Vegas has real momentum — we are a safer, stronger community and I’m proud to lead our progress. Now, it’s back to work, earning the opportunity to serve as the next Mayor of North Las Vegas.”

Ward 1 Council Seat still up for grabs; Ward 3 seat goes to Zeiler

In the Ward 1 City Council race, real estate agent Esmerelda Villeda and Navy veteran Sherry Strothers both advanced to the runoff on Nov. 3. Villeda received nearly 40% of the vote while Strothers garnered almost 35% despite a vast funding deficit. Villeda outspent Strothers almost 3:1 and reportedly has nearly $50,000 of cash on hand according to the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office.

The NLV Ward 3 Council seat vacated by the now-Mayoral candidate, Black, went to the current planning commissioner for North Las Vegas, Ida Zeiler, who campaigned on addressing the traffic and public safety issues facing Ward 3. She received 61.24% of the vote to defeat William Robinson II.

Incumbent Municipal Court Judge Chris Cannon earned another four-year term with 57.3% of the vote in his race against Alexander Henry. Belinda Harris ran unopposed to remain Department 3 Justice of the Peace.

Record voter turnout expected throughout Nevada in November

At the county level, voter turnout was 18.29% of Clark County voters – up from 14.48% for the 2024 Primary Elections. In the 2024 General Election, more than 70% of Clark County registered voters participated in the primary elections. Voter turnout for statewide elections was 21.8% – up from 16.2% for the 2024 primaries. The 2024 Presidential Elections had the second-highest turnout in the state’s history.

Voter turnout is expected to be at an all-time high for the 2026 Midterm Elections, so there will be ample opportunity for Black and Strothers to close their respective gaps.
