Clark County proposes crackdown on unlicensed short-term rentals, unveils 2027 state legislative priorities

August 5, 2026 by North Las Vegas News

The Clark County Board of Commissioners moved forward on several major local initiatives on Aug. 4, introducing a new ordinance aimed at curbing unlicensed short-term rentals, proposing state-level legislative priority bills and celebrating local government programs recognized on the national stage.

Targeted action on unlicensed short-term rentals

In an effort to protect neighborhood residential quality and streamline operations for legal hosts, the board introduced an ordinance designed to significantly reduce the number of unlicensed short-term rentals operating in unincorporated Clark County.

Unlike previous enforcement efforts focused solely on individual property owners, this proposed ordinance targets hosting platforms directly. Under the measure, platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO would be legally prohibited from facilitating point-of-sale transactions for short-term rentals that do not hold a valid license in unincorporated Clark County. A public hearing on the proposed ordinance is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18.

Addressing the rationale behind the measure, the county released a statement noting that the Nevada Legislature required the creation of a licensing and enforcement process. The statement explained that officials have worked to establish a framework that meets the needs of lawful operators while addressing resident concerns over unlawful or disruptive properties, adding that prohibiting hosting platforms from processing unlicensed transactions is expected to substantially decrease the number of illegal rentals.

2027 state legislative priorities take shape

Looking ahead to the 2027 Nevada State Legislative Session, the Board discussed four Bill Draft Requests (BDRs). Clark County is permitted to introduce four sponsored bills ahead of the state’s September 1 filing deadline.

The county’s proposed legislative agenda focuses on four key operational and consumer protection issues. Specifically, the proposals center on addressing rising workload at the Clark County Coroner’s Office, establishing consumer protections regarding how utility fees are charged in residential leases, curbing the operation of illegal mobile billboards along Las Vegas Boulevard and updating operational procedures for future holders of the Public Administrator’s Office.

National recognition for local initiatives

Opening the meeting on a celebratory note, Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick honored three county programs recognized as recipients of 2026 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards. Honorees included the Office of Sports and Special Events, the Clark County Eviction Diversion Program and the Clark County Fire Department’s Whole Blood initiative.
