Rattlers, Pioneers lead North Las Vegas spring sports contenders

It’s time for spring sports regionals, and here’s who you should be watching in North Las Vegas.

Mojave Boys Volleyball

The senior-stacked Mojave Rattlers (26-9, 7-0) have won 17 consecutive matches as of this writing, and are the 10th-ranked team in Nevada according to MaxPreps. Senior Kaleb Law leads the team with 68 blocks and 421 kills, and classmate Quintrell McGee leads the Rattlers with a .559 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Frankie Alvizures leads the team in digs (267), while senior Aaron Bagalawis has 835 assists and 57 aces to lead the Rattlers.

Shadow Ridge Softball

The Shadow Ridge Mustangs (17-6 14-4) sit third in the loaded Southern 5A Desert League. MaxPreps ranks them fifth in the state despite trailing two teams in their own division.

The Lady Mustangs have three players batting over .500, including sophomores Breanna Nielsen and Rosely Hensley-Mokiao, and freshman phenom Loa Duarte is hitting .419 and is 7-0 with a 2.72 ERA as the team’s second starter.

Canyon Springs Track and Field

The Canyon Springs Pioneers have a chance to win the 4A team track and field title. Senior Chance Trotter has the third-fastest 100-meter dash time and second-best 200-meter dash time amongst 4A competitors. Freshman Sherrod Leslie is also part of the top 4×100-meter relay team and the third-fastest 4×200-meter relay team in 4A, is top-five in the 200 meters and third in the 400 meters. Sophomore Karter Matthews is right behind him with the fourth-fastest, 4A 400-meter time. He’s also got the third-fastest 800-meter finish amongst 4A athletes. 

The Lady Pioneers are also loaded, featuring junior Jessica Davis, who’s first in the 4A in the 100 meters and tops in the state in the 200 meters. She’s also the third-ranked 4A competitor in the 400 meters, and part of the top 4×100-meter relay team in the state and top 4×200-meter relay team in 4A.

Senior Azyiah Marshall runs the fourth-fastest 100-meter dash in the state (second in 4A), third-fastest 200 meters (second in 4A) and is also part of the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay team. Classmate Jayla Fletcher ranks third in the 4A in the 100-meter dash, and sophomore Kemya Lay looks to podium in the 400. She’s got the second-best time in the event amongst 4A competitors.

Mojave Track and Field

The Mojave High School boys track and field team features sophomore Jayden Patton, who has the fastest 100-meter and 200-meter times in the state. He’s also third in the 300-meter hurdles and part of the fifth-fastest 4×200-meter relay.

The Rattlers also have the fourth-best long jumper in the state: senior Jabari Washington. His leap of 22 feet, nine inches is the longest jump in 4A this season, and his 43-foot, 10.75-inch triple jump is second-best in the 4A, so he could podium in both at State.

The Lady Rattlers feature junior Ciana Beals, who has the fastest 400-meter time in the state. Her 800-meter time of 2:17.82 is also the fastest in 4A, so she could win two state titles. She’s also a part of the second-fastest 4×400-meter relay team at the 4A level. Senior Derriah Wren has the top 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle times at the 4A level and the fourth-fastest times in the state, so she’ll contend for a pair of individual championships.

Also expected to contend at the 4A level are senior Nakaijah Beasley, who’s fourth in the high jump, and sophomore Jesenya McGuigan, whose eight-foot, five-inch pole vault ranks second amongst 4A vaulters.

Legacy Baseball

The Legacy High School baseball team (14-16, 4-4) is ranked 13th in the state according to Maxpreps, thanks to a pitching staff with a 3.47 ERA collectively. Senior Olvin Espinoza leads the staff with 54.1 innings pitched and a 2.32 ERA. 

Tyson and Easton Lake lead the lineup in batting average, with senior Tyson batting .375 and sophomore Easton hitting .349. Easton leads the team with 24 RBI and 37 hits, and Tyson leads the team with 33 runs scored and six triples.
