Wilson got the Aces on the board with a mid-range jumper, and she corralled back-to-back rebounds to help Las Vegas to a 12-7 lead with four minutes left in the first. She had 14 of her team’s first 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting, drew three fouls, hit all four free throws, had a steal and just one turnover in the first quarter to put the Aces up 20-13.

Golden State started sneaking the weakside help toward Wilson in the second quarter, limiting her scoring opportunities, but opening things up for her teammates. She got moved farther away from the basket, but nailed a three off a pick-and-pop play with Chelsea Gray to push the Aces’ lead to nine with 4:30 to play in the half. Gray hit Wilson with another nifty pass on the next possession, and she drained another trey from the same straightaway spot to reach 20 points before the end of the first half. Her over/under for points in the game was 25.5.

The double teams started coming at Wilson from the strong side late in the half, forcing the ball out of her hands and creating more wide open looks, but 10 offensive rebounds and turnovers led to buckets that kept the Valkyries within three points at halftime, 38-35.

An offensive board resulted in two shots for Wilson on the Aces’ first possession of the second half. She remained perfect at the charity stripe. The crowd erupted after scoring free pizza when Tiffany Hayes missed two free throws, then erupted again when Young followed that by hitting a corner three to make it 48-44. She’d hit another to push the Aces up 53-46 and force a Valkyries’ timeout with four minutes remaining in the third. NaLyssa Smith soared for an offensive board and hit a floater at the end of the reset shot clock to put the Aces up six. The lead was three after three.

Wilson re-entered the game with 8:40 remaining and the Aces down 61-58. She cleared out the lane for Jewell Lloyd, who hit a floater to cut the deficit to one. Then Lloyd drained a trey from the wing to tie it at 63. After Smith missed a pair of free throws, Wilson came down with a strong rebound to give the Aces a second-chance opportunity. Then she rebounded her own shot despite being fouled and coming down awkwardly, giving everyone in the building a scare. She’d stay in the game, and Young would hit a go-ahead three with the shot clock dwindling. She followed it with another to put Vegas up three with 4:30 remaining.

Wilson got some paint points to make it 72-70 with 3:30 left, and Young was fouled on a three before hitting all three free ones. With less than a minute left, Young found Wilson who knocked down a turnaround jumper to pull Vegas within one. Then Young hit a deep three to put the Aces up two with 20 seconds left. Young hit a pair of free throws to make the Valkyrie deficit three, and Wilson rebounded Janelle Salaun’s desperate shot deep in the corner.

The Valkyries hung around despite an uncharacteristically poor shooting night. They hit just 31% of their threes and 39% of their shots from the field, but they grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, winning both the rebound battle and turnover battle by two. Golden State got nine more shot attempts than the Aces as a result, and Vegas head coach Becky Hammon wasn’t too pleased with her team’s rebounding effort and box-out quality during the Valkyries’ fourth-quarter run.

“It wasn’t great,” Hammon laughed. “I thought they hurt us on the glass. Our initial defense was good, and then they get those second and third opportunities. It just puts a lot of pressure on your defense. However, they didn’t kill us in second chance points, but I don’t like them even getting those extra opportunities. So it’s something that we’ve got to clean up. It’s been an issue, but down the stretch I thought, you know, we got some key stops, and that’s always big, and then obviously Jackie, I thought, and A’ja stepping up and hitting some big shots for us and being those closers that we need them to be.”

The Aces (2-0) are one of four unbeaten teams in Commissioner’s Cup play, along with Dallas (2-0), New York (2-0) and Minnesota (3-0). Vegas (7-3) hosts Seattle (3-9) at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 8.
