Nevada’s job market holds steady in April with strong annual growth and unchanged unemployment

May 28, 2026 by North Las Vegas News Leave a Comment

Nevada’s labor market maintained its steady momentum in April 2026, marked by continued job growth and a stable unemployment rate, according to the latest economic reports released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held firm at 5.3 percent, matching March’s figure. Concurrently, the total number of seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs rose to 1,610,800—an increase of 2,900 jobs over the month. On an annual basis, Nevada’s job market expanded by 1.9 percent, adding substantial positions to the workforce over the past year, even as the overall labor force saw a minor monthly contraction of 3,475 individuals.

A national leader in job growth

The expansion keeps Nevada positioned at the forefront of national economic trends. David Schmidt, Chief Economist for DETR, emphasized that the state’s unique labor dynamics are driving this sustained momentum.

“April’s report continues the trend we have seen through the last several months,” Schmidt stated. “We again see high job growth, which is likely to remain among the fastest in the nation when data for all states is released. And we still see both a labor force participation rate and an unemployment rate higher than the national average, with a higher level of job search helping to sustain our higher levels of job growth overall.”

Regional employment performance

Employment trends varied across Nevada’s primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) on a seasonally adjusted basis:

  • Las Vegas: The state’s largest metro area saw a modest monthly increase of 300 jobs (less than 0.1%) since March. However, its long-term growth remains robust, boasting an increase of 20,900 jobs (1.8%) compared to April 2025.
  • Reno: Job numbers in the Reno area remained completely unchanged from March to April. Year-over-year, however, Reno matched Las Vegas’s growth rate, increasing by 5,200 jobs (1.8%) since April 2025.
  • Carson City: The capital city experienced a slight dip, losing 100 jobs (-0.3%) over the month. Carson City’s employment numbers remained entirely flat compared to April 2025.

Localized unemployment across counties

When looking at localized, non-seasonally adjusted data, unemployment rates shifted depending on the region. Among the major metropolitan areas, the Las Vegas area posted an unadjusted unemployment rate of 5.1 percent. Northern hubs saw lower rates, with Reno tracking at 3.9 percent and the Carson area at 3.8 percent.

On a county-by-county level, economic conditions revealed a stark divide between rural regions:

  • Humboldt County recorded the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.1 percent.
  • Mineral County experienced the highest economic strain, with an unemployment rate reaching 8.6 percent.
